Anointing of the Sick is one of the Sacraments of Healing (along with Reconciliation). This sacrament "has as its purpose the conferral of a special grace on the Christian experiencing the difficulties inherent in the condition of grave illness or old age" (CCC 1527).
Anointing of the Sick is administered only by a priest or bishop. Oil blessed by the bishop is used to anoint the forehead and hands of the sick person. This sacrament may be celebrated wherever the sick person is located (e.g. their home or in the hospital) or in the context of a gathering of the Christian community (e.g. Mass). The sacrament may be received more than once.
If you would like to receive the Sacrament of Anointing, please call the Parish Office at 319.377.4869 and ask to speak with a priest or pastoral minister.
